Mangaluru: All hell broke loose for Mhim Ibrahim Dahir, a Nigerian national when her Mangalorean husband was put behind the bars on charges of robbing money that belonged to the company that he was employed in. With three little kids in tow, the lady had no clue about what future had in store for her. But, it so seems that she can now breathe easy as she has landed in Mangaluru and has met her in-laws to find strength during these difficult and distressful days. However, her wait for her husband continues as 33-year-old Rasheed Shafi continues to languish in Ugandan prison.

Rasheed left to Uganda six-years-ago and it is said that one-year-ago, he was robbed by miscreants when he was on his way back home from work. In this robbery, Rasheed lost his employer company’s documents and money. Though Rasheed had lodged a complaint with the police, the company has been arguing that Rasheed had staged the robbery and following a complaint from the company, the Uganda police had arrested Rasheed. After serving jail from July, 2016, he was released on bail in December, 2016.

Ever since Rasheed went to jail, his Nigerian wife and three kids-aged five, three and one had been living in dire straits, seeking help from the locals there.

With his passport being confiscated by his company, Rasheed has been left in lurch, He can neither return to India nor can he apply for another job.

However, the Gujarat-based company, which has slammed a case against Rasheed has said that it is willing to withdraw the case if Rasheed pays Rs 15 lakhs to the company.

But Rasheed’s family that hails from Belthangady lives in acute poverty. With sole bread winner of family in lurch and without any silver lining at sight, Mohommed Shafi, father of Rasheed now says that some miracle can save his son. Rasheed’s father’s concern now is to get the passport of his son back because it would lapse in November and then even his stay will be illegal there.

The Nigerian wife and three kids-Shafi Ibrahim, Shafi Sulthana and Shafi Sapna could come to India due to the efforts of MFriends. The organisation members worked towards making arrangements to get the four from Uganda to India. Benevolent donors had helped the organisation in its efforts.

Shahul Hameed, Trustee of MFriends said that Food and Civil Supplies Minister UT Kahder, helped them in making things work. The organisation had also contacted External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and as per her suggestions, they contacted Indian Consulate Office in Uganda, with the help of Kannada Sangha. But, the clout of the company owner only foiled all efforts of MFriends.
