Belthangady: Abdul Rasheed (33), a youth from Panaje in Belthangady had left to far-flung Uganda to try his luck. But, it so seems that this decision has gone awry not just for Rasheed but for his entire family that has been living here in Belthangady.

It is said that Rasheed is in a fix in Uganda and a company in which he was employed has been now pressurising Rasheed’s father Mohommed Shafi to pay heft money to set his son free.

Rasheed left to Uganda six-years-ago and it is said that one-year-ago, he was robbed by miscreants when he was on his way back home from work. In this robbery, Rasheed lost his employer company’s documents and money. Though Rasheed had lodged a complaint with the police, the company has been arguing that Rasheed had staged the robbery and following a complaint from the company, the Uganda police had arrested Rasheed. After serving jail from July, 2016, he was released on bail in December, 2016.

Rasheed is married to a Nigerian and he has three children aged five, three and one. Ever since Rasheed went to jail, it was due to the help of the locals that his wife and kids have been making their both ends meet.

With his passport being confiscated by his company, Rasheed has been left in lurch, He can neither return to India nor can he apply for another job.

While Mohomed Shafi has approached Karnataka Minister for Civil Supplies U T Khader and Minister for Forest and Ecology Ramanath Rai seeking help. He has also made his problems heard at the Ministry of External Affairs, which has contacted the High Commission of Uganda. But, the authorities of Uganda have sent back the file stating that the case is subjudice.

However, the company, which has slammed a case against Rasheed has said that it is willing to withdraw the case if Rasheed pays Rs 15 lakhs to the company.

Shafi lives in acute poverty. With sole bread winner of family in lurch and without any silver lining at sight, Mohommed Shafi now says that some miracle can save his son.
