IAS officer’s death: Poojary demands CBI probe

Mangaluru: Former union minister B. Janardhan Poojary on Tuesday demanded Chief Minister of Karnataka to handover the case involving the death of Doddakoppalu Kariyanna Ravikumar, an IAS officer from 2009-cadre to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Speaking to the reporters, Poojary said that the IAS officer was known for honesty. Hence, that matter should be investigated seriously. “CBI must find out the reason behind transferring upright IAS officer from Kolar district. The Chief Minister adored the style of functioning of Ravi with me some days ago”, he said.

“Ravi was a rarest of rare officer among few honest IAS working cadres”, Poojary said suspecting the involvement of politicians behind the murkier death.

He advised that no one should be spared in connection to the case, irrespective of how powerful the person involved is.

Poojary came down heavily on the action of transfer undertook by the government and claimed no honest officers should be transferred before the completion of term. He called transfer of D K Ravi, unfortunate and said he would strongly criticize this move by the government.

The former Union Minister asked the probing institution to dig deeper into the matter in order to unravel who pushed IAS officer to take such extreme step.

He further stated with the protests erupting following the death testifies how popular the officer was in the Kolar district. Poojary urged CM to consider the issue on priority and handover the case to the central probing agency.

Besides, the senior party leader ordered district congress unit to give free hand to ensure proper functioning of bureaucrats.

Meanwhile, he told the Mayor Jacintha Alfred to not to disturb MCC Commissioner Hephsiba Korlapati Rani as he had received good feedback of the officer from his sources. 

Background

D K Ravi, popularly known as ‘Our DC’ while he was working as deputy commissioner of Kolar district died under mysterious circumstances on Monday at his posh St .John’s Woods Apartments in Koramangala. The Bangalore City Police Commissioner M N Reddi, who visited the spot, informed reporters that prima-facie it looks like death was as result of suicide.

Following protests, the police department constituted a special investigation team headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Rohini Kotoch Sepat to inquest the matter.  It could also be recalled that D K Ravi’s body was found hanging from ceiling fan when his wife Kusuma opened the door of the flat number 903, E block at around 6.30 PM in the 9th floor of the apartment.

D K Ravi was transferred as Joint Commissioner (enforcement) of Commercial Tax Department on November 2014. He was show the way by the state government from the post of Deputy Commissioner of Kolar.
