US violence: PM Modi says peaceful transfer of power must continue

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condemned the riots and violence by the supporters of US President Donald Trump, which took place at the US Capitol building in Washington DC on Wednesday.

PM Modi said he is “distressed” to see the news.

“Distressed to see news about rioting and violence in Washington DC. Orderly and peaceful transfer of power must continue. The democratic process cannot be allowed to be subverted through unlawful protests,” PM Modi tweeted.

Besides Modi, other world leaders have also expressed shock at the violence and chaos at unfolded in the US capital today.

“Disgraceful scenes in US Congress,” UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said.

“Trump and his supporters should finally accept the decision of the American voters and stop trampling on democracy,” German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas wrote on Twitter.

Angry Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building to disrupt the democratic functioning of Congress as it was in the middle of ratifying the election of Joe Biden as President and Kamala Harris as Vice President.

A woman was killed in gunfire inside Capitol building.
