Russian police launch investigation after 56-tonne bridge goes missing

Murmansk: Structures disappear either due to submersion, destruction or theft. While many structures that go missing are usually small, unless they are submerged by water, a massive 75-foot structure of a bridge weighing 56 tonnes in Russia’s Murmansk region went missing late in May. A criminal investigation has now been launched to figure out what really happened to the bridge that once stood over the Umba river.

The massive structure that went missing made up the central part of the bridge. Images and news of the missing bridge started being circulated on VK, a Russian social media platform and images continue to surface here. Some of the earlier images showed parts of the bridge lying in the water while in images that surfaced later, even the debris was missing.

Speculation is now rife among the locals that the bridge was brought down and plundered by thieves. One page accused “unknowns” of the bridge’s disappearance. It pointed out that there were no large pieces of debris at the bottom of the bridge and assured that no natural phenomena could bring the bridge down.

The bridge’s disappearance has been reported to Kirovsk Police, who have confirmed that an investigation is underway. They believe that thieves did this to sell the scrap metal.
