New Delhi: Purvanchal, which comprises the eastern end of Uttar Pradesh and western districts of Bihar, is fast replacing Mumbai and Ahmedabad as the biggest illegal arms bazaar in the country with its gangsters already running several outlets for weapons, some very sophisticated pieces, in nooks and crannies here.
Be it the murders of singer Gulshan Kumar or two CMOs of Uttar Pradesh, the record number of gangland killings executed recently essentially relied on such imported weapons from Purvanchal.
Bihars Munger district is the traditional hub of a flourishing indigenous gun-making industry, till recently geared to making crude single-shot “kattas” and now moving on to West-inspired pistols and rifles. It’s all illegal, of course. Purvanchal provides safe transit for the arms consignment.
According to police sources, the sophisticated and highly professional weapons are supplied to different parts of the country through UP’s Gorakhpur, Azamgarh, Sultanpur, Varanasi, Basti, Saint Kabir Nagar, Faizabad, Bahraich and Jaunpur districts.
It is always learnt that the cathe of weapons seized in different parts of the country are made in Munger and supplied through Purvanchal.
Actually, AK 47s, carbines, pistols and specially designed explosive devices made by highly professional gun makers of Munger attract criminals. And therefore, the area across the river Ganges is always flooded with orders from across the country. The demands increase ahead of any election in the country.
The connectivity between Bihar and Bengal also provides a safe transit for the arms consignment. The cops are aware of the illegal weapon trade but are far from finding a solution to put an end to it.
