Tokyo: With just 147 days to go till the opening ceremony of the Olympics on July 24 in Tokyo, the topic “Just Cancel It” has been the top trending hashtag on Twitter in Japan.

While the number of days might not hold any significance to many, it bears a lot of meaning for fans of the 1988 cyberpunk anime “Akira”.

One of the episodes from the show predicts that the Olympics will be held in Tokyo in the year 2020. A scene shows a signboard counting down the days until the Olympics reads “147 Days Until The Games”. It also encourages the citizens to support the event to make it a success. Underneath the board is a graffiti that reads, “Just cancel it!”

This scene has even more significance as there have been discussions about whether or not the Olympics this year should be cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

So far, over 2,800 people have died in China alone, while there are over 70,000 people, globally, who have been affected. As of the latest reports, confirmed coronavirus cases have popped up in Japan, Iran, Singapore, Italy, South Korea, and a few others. The virus is also known to be highly transmittable and recently, it was found that those who had recovered from the infection have relapsed.

With the coronavirus slowly moving towards becoming a pandemic, many are fearful that the virus can spread further if the Olympics is not cancelled.

The organisers are, as per the latest reports, waiting till the end of May to give the medical fraternity a chance to bring the outbreak under control, failing which the Olympics might get cancelled.

The coronavirus outbreak is being seen as a very serious issue as, in the past, the Olympics has only ever been cancelled due to the World Wars.
