MH370 agony continues; AMSA discovers pallet and belts

Perth: The search for a missing Malaysian airliner yielded no result even more than a fortnight after it disappeared but Australian acting Prime Minister Warren Truss Sunday said the hunt will continue as long as there is hope.

Search continued in the southern Indian Ocean after sightings of debris believed to be from the plane however objects were also seen by a civilian aircraft assisting in the search for Malaysia Airlines MH370 on Saturday, in what the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) confirmed was the “first visual sighting in the search so far”.

In its latest update Sunday night after the conclusion of the day’s search operation, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) described a wooden pallet and a number of other items, which were nondescript, around it, and some belts of some different colours around it as well; strapping belts of different lengths.

The AMSA officials also cautioned that the nearby straps “could be anything”, and until they re-find these items and have a good look at them, it’s hard to say whether they are associated with this or not.

A total of eight aircraft and the Royal Australian Navy’s HMAS Success supported Sunday’s search effort in a cumulative 59,000 sq km search area across two search areas within the Australian Search and Rescue Region southwest of Perth.

Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 had vanished mysteriously about an hour after taking off from Kuala Lumpur on March 8.
