London: If all goes well, then Mahatma Gandhi may become the first non-white individual whose image will be minted on British coin.
Chancellor of the exchequer Rishi Sunak’s office confirmed on Sunday that Mahatma Gandhi’s image on a coin is being considered as part of efforts to celebrate achievements of non-white individuals, under a campaign named ‘We too Built Britain’.
The proposal to put Gandhi’s image on a British coin was first made by former chancellor Sajid Javid in October 2019.
“The Royal Mint Advisory Committee is currently considering a coin to commemorate Gandhi,” the UK Treasury said.
Sunak has asked the Royal Mint Advisory Committee to recognise the contributions of the Black, Asian and other minority ethnic communities. Gandhi will be the first non-white person on British currency.
