Mumbai : A massive fire broke out at the Ballard Pier Estate Exchange building in south Mumbai on Wednesday morning. According to reports, a short circuit on the third floor of the building led to the blaze and the fire gradually spread to other parts.
“The fire broke out on the third floor of the Exchange Building in Ballard Pier,” fire brigade sources said. Fifteen fire tenders have been rushed to the spot, they said, adding that there were no reports of any casualties in the incident.
“It is a three-storey building and an old building. The Census Directorate office is the only important office in the building. The office is not affected. The fire could be due to a short circuit as during the rainy season water percolates through the walls and may also get inside the electrical circuit. All people inside the building have been evacuated.”
An eyewitness said that there are several Central Government offices in the building. “The fire broke at around 11:30 am. There are many Central Government offices in the building. I was on the fourth floor in my office when fire broke on the third floor. My colleagues and I ran out of the building as soon as we saw the smoke.”
