Badrinath faces fear of lake burst

Dehradun : Badrinath which is somewhat recovering from last months devastating catastrophe that led to flash floods, is now facing threat of a lake burst. Uttarakhand Disaster Mitigation and Management Centre (DMMC) has issued a warning on the formation of a glacial lake near Mana village on the Alaknanda River.
The NRSC report shows glacial lakes around the Bhagirathi, and the Satopanth glaciers. Also, the Indian Space Research Organisations (ISRO) Bhuvan satellite shows a pre-event image that depicts a probable landslide area near Mana village in Badrinath. Though the report was sent by the NRSC as information, fear of a tragedy similar to the one that occurred in Kedarnath has alarmed the State disaster management department.

Army and ITBP teams have visited the spot and have studied the situation and have said there was no need to issue any warning immediately.

Even CM Vijay Bahuguna has held talks with the  officials  and warnings have been given in Badrinath, Maana, Pandukeshwara, Joshimutt and Karnaprayag. There is a fear  that even the Badrinath temple may be affected in case of glacial lake burst.

Heavy rains in Tehri Gerhwal district has washed away several houses.
