China: A lot of energy is put to use to illuminate cities in the night, which costs a great deal to the administrations across the world.

However, thinking out of the box, China has decided to tap people’s love for moonlight!

The experiment is on a full swing in the city of Chengdu, China. According to reports in an English Daily of China, the fake moon is expected to be launched by 2020 from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center situated in the Sichuan province of China.

As the natural moon in the orbit rebounds the reflection of the sunlight to the earth, similarly a reflective coating is said to be applied to the artificial moon, which acts similar to that of the natural one.

According to the team of scientists working on the experiment, the artificial one is going to shine eight times brighter than the real one.

The distance of it is said to be closer than that of the actual moon. It is going to be launched within the planned orbit, approximately 310 miles from the earth’s surface. The orbital distance of the real moon is said to be 2,38,900 miles.

According to the Head of Tian Fu New Area Science Society, Chunferg, he says that the artificial moon will have some of the streetlights in Chengdu, replaced. This will help in saving energy.

However, the artificial one will not be illuminating the whole night sky.

The English Daily has also reported that the moonbeams can be controlled and put to task only to illuminate specified areas.

A science web portal has reported that not much of the specifications about the project is known.

One of a member from the experiment team named Wu has said that if this launch turns out to be a successful one, three more could follow in 2022.

According to Wu, Chengdu city can save up to $174 million in electricity every year, if the artificial moon will be launched successfully.

The artificial moon has a capacity of illuminating 31 square miles of the city.

Other than just lighting up the city, it can also come in handy during the blackouts in the disaster areas.
