Udupi: The Sand Mining Committee and MLA Raghupathy Bhat have given a call for an indefinite day and night protest from 10 AM, on January 28, opposing the sand policy announced by the district administration.

The Sand Committee unanimously decided to hold a protest at a meeting held in Bannanje Gurunarayana Swami Mandir Hall on Friday, January 25.

The action committee of the organisations on sand extraction has been demanding that all the traditional license holders should be allowed to extract sand in the Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) limits.

Raghupathy Bhat said that an indefinite protest will be held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office premises, at Manipal, against the district administration. He said that although the state and the central governments have removed all the obstacles in the way of sand extraction, the DC had failed to act regarding the issue.

“The state government had issued an order with regard to sand extraction on January 4, but the district administration has not yet taken any action regarding sand extraction for licensed traditional sand minors,” he said.

Jerry Vincent Dias, District Builders’ Association President, Praveen Suvarna, President of Udupi Lorry Owners’ Association, Dinakar Babu, Zilla Panchayat President, Chandra Poojary, Katpady Lorry Owners’ Association, Kundapur Sand Extraction Committee’s Gangadhar Shetty and others were present during the action committee meeting.
