Udupi: The Karnataka Komu Sauhardha Vedike, Muslim Okkoota, CITU, Dalita Damanithara Swabhimani Samiti, International Christian Associations Federation, Catholic Sabha,  Bahujan Kranthi Morcha and other associations of the district organised a procession and protest meet against the group lynching, anti-constitution and anti-minorities attitude etc., on Friday, July 12.

The protest march was held from Board School near Service bus station to Hutatma Chowk at Ajjarkad. Addressing the protesters, social activist and secretary of Karnataka Komu Sauhardha Vedike, Prof. Paniraj said that the group lynching started in Adi Udupi in 2004. “Presently, group lynching on Muslims, Dalits and minorities has increased in the country. Some powerful persons are trying to uproot the Indian constitution and it is a great tragedy”, he lamented.

He expressed concern that the mob lynching incidents were occurring frequently. “Many innocent including a police officer and a mentally challenged woman were killed in these incidents. The main reason for mob lynching incidents is the lack of fear about the consequences. Everyone in the group who commit the crime thinks that they can get away with it. An ineffective investigation by police officials and a weak justice system are the reason for this lack of fear,” he opined.

“There are various reasons for mob lynching and the governments are also supporting the same. Most of the mob lynchings are due to cow vigilantism. Several ministers publicly supported mob lynching over the suspicion of beef consumption. Since three years, the mob lynching crimes cases have increased and the governments concerned not taking strict action,” he said.

“Some ministers give hate speeches on minorities and lead to mob lynching. There is no trust in the police system which is influencing persons to take law into their own hands,” he said.

Idrees Hoode said that since 2015, in various places of the country, lynching, atrocities on minorities, murders and other crimes have been taking place in more numbers.

“The reason behind such crimes are biased regarding caste, religion and other simple matters. These people breaking the laws of the constitution are directly involved in terrorism with the minorities, Dalits and other low caste people”, he said.

Janata Dal (S) District President Yogish Shetty, Vishwanath Rai of CITU and leaders of different associations spoke at the protest meet.
