Various achievers honoured at 70th Republic Day celebration in Udupi

Udupi: The 70th Republic Day celebrations began here with the hoisting of the National Flag by District In-charge Minister Dr. Jayamala here at the Mahatma Gandhi Municipal Grounds, Beedinagudde on Saturday, January 26.

After having received the Guard of Honour and inspected the parade, she spoke on the various grants that were sanctioned by the coalition government towards the development of the district.

Dr. Jayamala spelt out the message of ‘peace’ and said that everybody must strive hard to maintain peace and brotherhood in this country.

She said, “About Rs 1289 Lakh has been sanctioned towards various schemes. Around 1215 students were admitted to various government hostels in the district this year.”

Meanwhile, students who had secured 60 to 70 percent marks in the SSLC board exams were distributed a consolidated prize amount of Rs 7000 and for students above 75 percent marks it was Rs 15000.

Speaking on the government school developments, Jayamala said, “We have already appointed 32 teachers for the higher primary sections in the government schools. An amount of Rs 546 Crore has been sanctioned towards basic facilities for government schools, of which Rs 188 Crores is already spent.”

She also mentioned that free medical facilities would be provided to women and children at Kusamma Shambhu Haji Abdullah Memorial Women and Child Hospital.

Later, there was March past by armed police forces, district police, NCC, Scouts and other troops.

Government officials were honoured for their services. Fire Brigade officials who toiled day in and day out to rescue the flood victims too were honoured.

The national level sports achievers were also honoured.

The special attraction of the programme was ‘Ongole’, a bull that had won an award during a show held at Sindhanur of Raichur district.

Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Raghupathy Bhat, Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis, President of Zilla Panchayat Dinakar Babu, President of Taluk Panchayat Nalini Pradeep Rao and other officials were present.
