US Foundation, KMC provide free advanced surgical treatment to 37 kids

Manipal: The Kasturba Hospital Manipal, had organised an advanced paediatric surgical programme for children of upto 16 years of age, “Bal Shalya Kriya Mission-Manipal” in collaboration with Peedh Parai Foundation, Houston (USA) and Bantwal Ananth Mallya Charitable Trust from February 5 to 10. In all, 37 children were provided free advanced surgical treatment. One child would be discharged by this weekend. The 36 other children were discharged after the surgical treatment and they are doing well after treatment.

Dr. Avinash Shetty, Medical Superintendent, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, said, “An eight-member specialists’ team from Houston, USA and Germany led the ‘Bal Shalya Kriya Mission-Manipal’ and they were supported by a team of 32 members including surgeons and anaesthetists from Kasturba Hospital here. The Bal Shalya Kriya Mission-Manipal conducted this in collaboration with Peedh Parai Foundation, Houston (USA) and Bantwal Ananth Mallya Charitable Trust represented by Jeethendra Nayak, an alumni of MIT, Manipal. He was supported by Sudhir Shetty, another alumni from MIT, Manipal for the arrangements for the surgical team.

According to Dr. Vijaykumar, Head, Department of Paediatric Surgery, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, six children have undergone Urethroplasty where the urethral tube which was absent was reconstructed using other body tissues. Another two kids underwent Ureteric Re-Implantation for their reflux problems. Three children underwent minimal access Thoracoscopy with Thorocotomy in which surgery was done to remove and test whether there was malignancy.

Three other kids underwent surgery of thorax to prevent herniation of abdominal contents into thorax. One kid underwent Pycloplasty in which the defect in the kidney is corrected through Laproscopic surgery. Two more kids underwent Spleenactomy and Spleenorenal shunt for correction of portal hypertension by shunting the portal blood into systemic circulation. One child underwent cosmetic repair of the cleft lip and another underwent removal of Haemangioma containing cluster of vessels.
