Udupi SP’s phone-in session results in more arrests and cases registered

Udupi: “A discussion was held with the Deputy Commissioner in relation to actions to be taken against the illegal matka business in the district and the main kingpin of the matka business, Leo Cornelio is absconding and anyone who gives information about his whereabouts will be awarded,” said Dr. Sanjeev M Patil, Superintendent of Police, Udupi district.

Speaking with media persons during the phone–in programme on Saturday, October 21, he said that 139 cases had been registered and 142 people were arrested in connection with the illegal matka business. With the effect of phone in programme, 3 cases have been registered and 3 persons were arrested during the last week. 2 people were arrested for illegal drug consumption and 4 were arrested for illegal gambling. 99 COTPA acts, 29 driving under the influence alcohol, 138 cases of shrill horn users and 905 without helmet bikes riding cases were registered.

There were many calls with various complaints ranging from cockfighting in Kota to lending of money with illegal interest at Ambagilu.

Dr. Sanjeev M Patil said that as per the circular from the state government in response to illegal agents in India by the embassy officials from Riyadh of Saudi Arabia, he said that most of the people get cheated by the agents whe they falsely promise jobs in the gulf, especially to women. Regarding the false job promises by the illegal agents, the police has organized awareness programmes for the people. “Severe action will be taken against these illegal recruiting agents in the district,” the SP said.

There were a total of 29 calls received by the Superintendent of Police during the one hour phone – in programme on October 21.
