Udupi: The unsightly scene of animal carcasses rotting away on NH-66 can be a bit jarring if you have a weak stomach. The people who live in the areas on either side of the highway have more pressing concerns than a sensitive stomach.
The Udupi Zilla Nagarika Samithi Trust handed over a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of the district regarding the disposal of animals carcasses from the highway.
According to the Samithi, the stretch from Shiroor to Hejmady on NH-66 has the persistent problem of animals like dogs, cats and other small creatures dying on the roads due to collission with the various motor vehicles that use the highway. Unfortunately, the carcasses are not disposed off quick enough and are left to rot in the heat. The bad smell and the rotting flesh attracts unwanted diseases which spread to the nearby areas, which is bad for the people living there.
They demanded that the carcasses be disposed of by the concerned grama panchayats, municipalities or town panchayats. They also demanded that the fish transport vehicles letting out waste water all over the Highways be banned.
The memorandum was received by G. Anuradha Additional Deputy Commissioner on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner.
Nithyanand Olakkadu, Chief Secretary of the Nagarika Samithi, Social Activist Tharanath Mesta and Environmentalist Vinaychandra Sasthan were present.
