Udupi Diocese’s first ordained priest takes his own life

Udupi: In a shocking incident, the very first priest to be ordained from the Udupi Diocese, 36-year-old Rev Fr Mahesh D’Souza, ended his own life by hanging himself from the ceiling fan late on Friday, October 11 night. It is not yet known why the priest chose to take this extreme step.

He was the principal of the Don Bosco English Medium School and assistant parish priest of Our Lady of Health Church, Shirva.

Fr Mahesh D’Souza hails from the Moodubelle parish and his parents currently reside in Manipal.

He was ordained on April 15, 2013. Fr Mahesh served as the headmaster of Milagres English Medium School, assistant parish priest of Milagres Cathedral, assistant parish priest of Mount Rosary Church, Kallianpur, before he was transferred to Shirva to take over as the principal of the Don Bosco English School in 2016.

The funeral mass will be held at Shirva Church, Udupi on Tuesday, October 15 at 3 pm.
