Udupi: In a continuation to the sand shortage saga that has been plaguing the Udupi district, a delegation of the people’s representatives from the said area, met with Union Minister for Forests and Environment, Dr. Harshvardhan on Wednesday, November 14 to discuss the issues.

The delegation included Udupi MLA Raghupathy Bhat, Union Minister D V Sadananda Gowda, Leader of the Opposition in Legislative Council, MLC Kota Srinivas Poojary, Chief Whip of the Opposition in the Assembly V Sunil Kumar and MLAs Lalaji R Mendon and B M Sukumar Shetty.

After the meeting, MLA Bhat said that the union minister had instructed his joint secretary Riteshkumar Singh to ask the state government to take a decision on the matter of the licences for sand extraction as soon as possible. He also said that directions to allow issuance of licences to those who began the traditional sand extraction after 2011 would be communicated to the state government.

The deputy commissioner had earlier written to the state government seeking clarification on whether the sand extraction should be entrusted only to those who used the traditional method of sand mining before 2011.
