Udupi athlete Jyothi Shetty dies after accident

Udupi: Senior athlete, Jyothi Shetty breathed her last on Sunday, June 9, following an accident that occurred near Ambagilu on Saturday.

50-year-old Jyothi was riding pillion on a bike ridden by her brother when the vehicle skid causing the athlete to fall. Jyothi sustained severe head injuries as a result and was immediately rushed to a hospital.

Jyothi was a national and international athlete and was the only active senior athlete in Udupi. She had won many medals, both national and international, over the course of her career. Just last year, she won two medals at the Asia Masters Athletics Championships held in China. In September this year, she was supposed to represent the country once again at the world championships in Spain.

Jyothi and her brother were on their way back from a hospital after having taken a friend there, who had also met with an accident near Ambagilu.

She is survived by her husband, Uday Shetty and two children.
