Udupi accident victim donates organs, 5 patients to benefit

Manipal: A lady who died in a road mishap near Kota High School, Kundapura on December 12 has now become saviour for as many as five patients who have been battling for their life.

Kasturi Poojari aged 36 years was admitted to Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, following the mishap. She had severe head injury, Right Femur Fracture with Hip Dislocation as a result of the accident.

However, she was declared as brain dead as per the protocol and procedures laid down by the Transplantation of Human Organ Act 1994 by authorized panel of doctors at 6.00 pm on December 13 and the 2nd declaration was done at 12.00 am on December 14.
Subsequently family members of Kasturi Poojari expressed their willingness to donate the viable organs- two Cornea, two kidneys and liver to save life of 5 others.

As per the protocols and decisions of the Jeeva Saarthakathe (formerly ZCCK), one kidney would be for the identified patient in Kasturba Hospital, Manipal and second kidney for a patient at Father Mullers Hospital, Mangalore, and the Liver and Heart valves of Kasturi Poojari would offer life to patients in AJ Hospital Mangalore. Both Corneas would be transplanted for the identified patient in Kasturba Hospital, Manipal.

Post harvesting organs, the Green Corridor was arranged by Police Dept Udupi District at 1.30 noon from Manipal to Mangalore.
