Two-day ‘Krishimela’ to be held in Brahmavar from Oct 19

Udupi: The Zonal Agricultural and Horticultural Research Station in Brahmavar (affiliated to University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences, Shivamogga) are organizing a two-day “Krishimela” on October 19 and 20.

The event is being organised in collaboration with the Agricultural Diploma College (Brahmavar), Agricultural and Horticultural Research Station (Ullal), Krishi Vigyan Kendra (Brahmavar), Mangaluru Agriculture Department, Directorate of Cashew and Cocoa Development (Cochin), Canara Bank (Brahmavar), District Krishik Samaja (Udupi), and SKDRDP (Udupi). The programme is also co-sponsored by the Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Sericulture, Fisheries, and Forestry Departments of the Udupi District.

Speaking to media persons at the Udupi Press Club on Thursday, October 17, ZAHRS (Brahmavar) Associate Director of Research Dr SU Patil said that the main objective of the mela was the transfer of latest agricultural technologies through demonstrations, discussions, field visits, seminars and interactions between scientists and farmers at the Zonal Agricultural and Horticultural Research Station. The programme often referred to as a farmer’s fest provides a platform for farmers to become aware of the advances in agriculture production technologies.

The mela will be inaugurated by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Agricultural Minister Lakshman Savadi and the agricultural exhibition will be inaugurated by Home Minister and District Incharge Minister Basavaraj Bommai.

A new crop of rice known as the “Sahyadri Panchamukhi” will be launched by Minister for Mujarai, Fisheries, Shipyard and Inland transport Kota Srinivasa Poojary.

Udupi MLA Raghupathi Bhat, UAHS Vice-Chancellor Dr MK Naik, Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje, Udupi Zilla Panchayat President Dinakara Babu and Vice President Sheela K Shetty will also attend the programme along with officers and board members of UAHS (Shivamogga). The inaugural ceremony of the Krishimela 2019 will be held on October 19 at 10.30 am

During Krishimela, seminars have been organised which address topics such as “Cultivation of Cashew and other Plantation Crops”, “Profitable integrated farming systems”, “Soil and Water conservation and Zero Budget Natural Farming”, and “Hi-Tech Horticulture”. These seminars will be delivered by UAHS scientists as well as other experts and progressive farmers.

As a part of Krishimela, an exhibition to showcase the advances of modern technologies in agriculture is also arranged. About 150 enterprises in agriculture are expected to participate in this exhibition.

Followings are the main attractions of this Krishimela:

  • High yielding rice varieties and seed production
  • Preparation of Dapog nursery and SRI method of paddy cultivation
  • Multi-storied cropping system and nutrient management in coconut and Arecanut
  • Grafting techniques in Horticulture crops, terrace gardening and spine gourd
  • Demonstration of organic manures, compost, vermicompost and Azolla production
  • Dairy, Fisheries, Goat, Rabbit, Poultry, Piggery and Duck rearing demonstration
  • Fodder production demonstration in hydroponics
  • Demonstration of CO-4 and CO-5 fodder grass production
  • Exhibition and demonstration of agricultural implements
  • Demonstration of Bio-gas production units
  • Exhibition and sale of decorative plant
  • Demonstration of value-added food products
  • Attractive Agricultural Exhibition
