Udupi: The family members of a woman who died at the district hospital, staged a protest at the premises accusing the doctors of negligence when treating her.

Even though the woman had tested positive for COVID-19, the family demanded that the hospital authorities hand over her body. This created a tense situation in the area and the police had to take control of the hospital and the surroundings, KSRP forces were also deployed at the spot.

The woman, Raksha (26), wife of BJP Yuva Morcha Udupi district vice president Shivaprasad, was sick for three days and early on August 21 morning, she was taken to the district hospital for treatment as an outpatient and returned home. At around 9 am, she passed away in her sleep.

Soon after this Shivaprasad alleged that the doctors at the hospital administered an injection to his wife, causing her death. Soon after her death, a rapid test was conducted and the results came back negative for COVID. However, in the lab report her result came back positive.

There is something fishy in this and the report has no signature form any of the concerned doctors, he alleged, holding the hospital responsible for his wife’s death.

On Saturday morning, the woman’s family members and locals gathered near the hospital and demanded justice. They urged the district surgeon to explain the cause of death and an immediate release of the woman’s body.

During the protest, the hospital authorities issued the lab report with a doctor’s signature. This raged the protestors who began to suspect foul play. The situation turned tense and the Udupi Town police inspector Saktivelu tried to pacify the protestors. There was a heated exchange between the protesters and the police and KSRP forces were pressed to action.

Raksha is survived by husband Shivaprasad and two sons.

A complaint in this regard has been registered at the Udupi police station.
