Udupi: Amid high drama, a supporter of Udupi District Congress Committee Vice President Muniyal Uday Kumar Shetty tried to self immolate by pouring kerosene at a spontaneous protest in Hebri on April 17.

A large number of supporters of Shetty, who were upset over the denial of party ticket to their leader, had gathered at the Congress office at Hebri to protest against the decision and were raising slogans against senior Congress leader Veerappa Moily.

Suddenly Asif of Muratangadi near Hebri, jumped ahead and poured kerosene over himself. Some among the crowd prevented him from lighting the match and averted any further mishap.

On hearing the news, Muniyal Uday Kumar Shetty arrived at the protest venue and pacified the crowd. He requested his supporters to be patient and show courage and dedication to the party and its leadership. He also asked them to work towards gaining support for Congress candidate from Karkala constituency.
