Udupi: The state government under Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has released Rs. 21 Crore for various development projects, said Pramod Madhwaraj, District In- charge Minister and Minister for Fisheries, Sports and Youth Empowerment, on Friday, February 24.

Speaking to media persons at the Press Club, the minister said that at Thimmannu Kudru in Kemmannu Grama Panchayat, Rs 5 Crore would be utilised for bridge, Rs 5 Crore for Ambagilu-Manipal-Udyavar four lane road, Rs 1 Crore for the construction of duct and divider on Ambagilu-Manipal-Udyavar-Malpe road, Rs 2 Crore for Brahmavar-Barkur Road and Rs 2 Crore for widening the Kenjur-Nelkur Road thus spending Rs 24.10 Crore for developmental projects.

With regard to diesel subsidy for the fishermen, the amount would be transferred directly into the bank account of mechanised boat users, he disclosed. The subsidy amount has been increased from Rs 7 to Rs 9.40 per litre, he added. A total of Rs 100 Crore and an additional fund of Rs 20 Crore for diesel subsidy, altogether Rs. 120 Crores had been released by the state government for the first time in the history of Karnataka governance, he claimed.

Though when compared to 10000 mechanised boats in Maharashtra, 7700 boats in Gujarat Karnataka has only 3600, the Karnataka government is providing 90,000 litres of diesel per person every year which is a record when compared to the BJP ruled states, Madhwaraj stated.

The government had paid an interest subsidy rate of Rs 2.77 Crore in 2012/13 and Rs 6.55 Crore from 2013/14 to 2015/16, he added. He said that around 10,780 people had benefited from the state government. However, the union government should bear the responsibility of releasing funds for subsidy and a letter had been written to the Centre following its price rise on diesel, the minister said.

He announced that the Karnataka Fisheries Department and Malpe Development Committee would organise “Matsya Mela” from March 3 to 5 at Malpe Beach. The main objective of the mela is to create awareness among the public about the importance of fish. There would be an exhibition and sale of fish products, ready to eat fish, aquarium fish and accessories. Scientific information and opportunities in fisheries sectors would be disseminated by experts and cultural programmes would also be held, he added.

Meanwhile, the State level Yuva Jana mela and the Swami Vivekananda State Youth Award distribution programmes will be also be held at the Indoor Stadium Ajjarkad, Udupi on the same days.

Speaking about the controversy in DC transfer, the minister said that he had no role in the procedure. It is the decision of the government which normally exists, he explained. “The outgoing DC has told that he is not happy with the decision of early transfer. The newly appointed DC, Priyanka Mary Francis has a good experience in the district and she is well aware of the problems here. She can deliver the best administration for the district,” Madhwaraj said.
