Six inmates of Vishwasada Mane go back home

Udupi: As many as three men and three women found roaming in the streets and admitted at the Vishwasada Mane at Shankerpura are now returning to their respective homes, said Pastor Sunil John D’Souza.

Addressing a media conference at Udupi Press Club here on Monday, July 15, Pastor Sunil John D’Souza said that these people, belonging to Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, were found in very bad condition and they were all mentally ill.

On November 22, 2016, a man was found near Manipal DC Office with mental illness and he wore a foul-smelling dress. He was not speaking to anyone. He was 45 years old and was taken to Vishwasada Mane. He had one bag in his hand. He was taken care of and provided medical help till he regained normalcy. Later, he revealed that his name is Vittal from Gadag.

On May 11, 2016, one mentally ill person was found near Kollur Highway. He did not know where to go and he was roaming on the roadside. He was 50 years old. President of Vishwasada Mane and team took him to their shelter home. Later he was given a shower, food and showed to a doctor. A few days later, he recovered and recognised himself as Nambayya from Telangana.

In Shankerpura near Katpady roadside, a woman was found drunk. She was speaking to herself aloud and smelt bad. She was about 45 years old and mentally ill. On 24 March 2017, Vishwasada Mane members took her to their shelter. After treating her out of her illness in some days, she remembered that she is Bhojamma from Telangana. However, despite informing the family, none of its members has come to take her so far.

Similarly, Suresh from Bengaluru, Sujatha from Andhra Pradesh, Shobha from Tumakuru were rescued by Vishwasada Mane.

Pastor Sunil John D’Souza said that on Tuesday, July 16, it had been decided to send all the six members to their respective families accompanied by the Vishwasada Mane staff.

D’Souza said that around 800 people had been sent back to their homes thus far after treating them. Presently, there are around 150 inmates in the Vishwasada Mane Ashram which includes 40 children, men and women. About 20 to 25 volunteers are taking care of them. Doctors, nurses and psychologists are treating them in the Ashram.

He said the ashram started in 2003 with one rented house at Shankerpura. Vishwasada Mane cares for the destitute with their daily needs, food, shelter, physical treatments etc., with love and care till they regain their memory and get back home.

They are also trained in different field works.

David Lewis Tallur, Edward Menezes, Xavier Mathew Castalino were present along with Pastor Sunil John D’Souza.
