Udupi: Shailesh Upadhyaya, aged 20 years, has been chosen as the 32nd successor of the Palimar Matt, one of the prestigious Asta Matts in Udupi, said Sri Vidyadeesha Theertha Swamiji.
Addressing a press meet at the Sri Krishna Matt here on Wednesday, March 27, Paryaya Swamiji said that Shailesh Upadhyaya, son of Surendra Tantri and Laxmi Surendra Tantri from Kodavoor Kambalakatte near Malpe, completed his primary education from Udupi Vidyodaya School and high school education from Sanskrit Vidyalaya. For the last three years, he has been studying Veda at Yoga Deepika Gurukula, at the base of the Palimar Matt near Padubidri, he said.
The Swamiji, now aged 63 years, added that Shailesh agreed to become his successor of his own accord. “After thorough discussions with the astrologers and Matt scholars, and obtaining the permission of his family members, we have chosen Shailesh,” he said.
Upadhyaya’s brother is currently pursuing his studies in Ayurvedic medicines. His father, Surendra Upadhyaya is serving as a Tantri in various religious places.
Speaking to the media, Upadhyaya said, “I have had an interest in spirituality since my childhood. Later, my Guru gave me responsibilities with faith and trust. He also gave me a chance to offer prayers to Lord Krisha. I will do my best to serve my responsibilities with trust and faith. It is Mukyaprana’s acceptance of me as successor to Palimar Swamiji that has given me courage.”
The rituals will begin on May 9. The Brahma Muhurta and acceptance of Sanyasa will be held on May 10, the Asta Mahamantras retreat will be on May 11 and the Pattabhisheka on May 12.
The Palimar Swamiji informed that, after the ceremonies, Upadhyaya’s further studies will be held at Sri Krishna Matt.
