Udupi: Having a Rain Water Harvesting (RWH) system in place while constructing/completion of a new house is mandatory. The houses which are yet to be constructed must imbibe an RWH unit in the plan, failing which no licence/permission will be issued for the house construction.
In this regard, Deputy Commissioner Hepshiba Rani Korlapati said that the Central government has brought in ‘Jal Shakthi’ campaign to tackle the drought-like situation and to recharge the water resources.
She said that the water crisis has been hitting the district every summer and now rainwater harvesting system will have to be in place to recharge open wells, borewells etc so that the district is in a better position to face the droughts.
She said that details will be collected at the Deputy Commissioner’s office with regard to the houses that have made space for RWH units in the plan and the houses completed with the unit in place. She informed that the residents of the houses that have adopted RWH unit will be given free training with regard to terrace gardening.
The DC also said that the local governing bodies must take steps to rejuvenate the lakes and other water bodies. “The Udupi City Municipal Council must identify five wards and make sure each house in the ward plants five saplings. In this way at least 20,000 saplings should be planted by July end,” she said.
