Role of women in the society is equal to that of men: Sheela Shetty

Udupi: The contribution of women in various fields is unforgettable. Even in the political field, women are not far behind men, said Sheela K Shetty, Vice President of Udupi Zilla Panchayat.

She was speaking after inaugurating the International Women’s Day celebrations organised by the district administration, District Legal Services Authority, Udupi district Women and Child Development Department, District Women’s Associations Federation and Sthreeshakti Okkoota, Udupi district and Paryaya Sri Palimar Matt, Udupi at Rajangana, Sri Krishna Matt here on March 8. Sheela said that there had been a 33 percent reservation of women in the political field leaving a door open for them to participate in politics.

She said that women should take advantage of the reservation and be active in politics adding that the government needed to provide various women’s organisations in the state.

Chief guest Deputy Commissioner of Udupi district Priyanka Mary Francis said that women should make use of their rights so that they could be empowered. Unlike some other countries, women in our country can vote in the various elections thanks to the constitution and therefore women must make use of this constitutional right, he added.

Shivananda Kapasi, CEO of Zilla Panchayat took an oath from all the participants on the occasion and gave some important tips regarding voting in the elections and called for the women to check the voters’ list before voting. He said that in order to confirm the vote, one could send an SMS to 9731979899 or check the election commission website.

Prof. Nithyanand, the resource person for the occasion spoke on women’s empowerment and the right to vote. Jyothi P Nayak, Legal Officer gave some important legal information regarding women.

Guest of honour Nalini Pradeep Rao, Udupi Taluk Panchayat also spoke on the occasion.

Senior Civil Judge and Member Secretary of District Legal Services Authority Kumarachandra, Additional Superintendent of Police Gracy Gonsalves, Deputy Director of Women and Child Welfare Department Sarala Kanchan, District President of Mahila Okkoota Vasanthi Rao, Radhadas, Dhanlaxmi and others were present.

Gracy Gonsalves delivered the keynote address and welcomed the gathering. An awareness programme on voting during the elections was also organised.
