Renovated St Peter’s Church, Barkur all set for blessing, inauguration on Dec 15

Udupi: The renovated St Peter’s Church, Barkur of the Udupi Diocese is all set to be inaugurated on Sunday, December 15, at 3.30 PM.

Addressing a the media at the Udupi Press Club on Thursday, December 12, Rev Fr. Philip Neri Aranha, parish priest of St Peter’s Church, Barkur said that the church is one of the most prominent Catholic centres in the Udupi district and is renowned for harmonious living with inspiration for religious and social development.

The century-old dilapidated Gothic-style church has been completely repaired with the use of sophisticated building materials for the benefit of the devotees.

The renovation project was approved by the Karnataka Government’s Christian Development Project in 2017-18, with a total donation of Rs 50 lakh, with donations from devotees as well.

The renovated church features some of St. Peter’s life in glass at the gates of the sanctuary, lights, granite and other additions that have attracted the attention of the young people and the devotees. The renovated church will add much splendour to Barakur, which has its own special place in the religious sphere.

A solemn Eucharistic celebration and blessing of the revived Church will be held on December 15 at 3.30 PM by Most Rev Dr. Gerald Isaac Lobo, Bishop of the Udupi Diocese.

The reception will be held at 5.30 PM, which will be presided over by the Bishop of Udupi. Msgr Baptist Menezes, Very Rev Fr. Stany B. Lobo, Chancellor of the Udupi Diocese, Very Rev Dr. Lawrence D’Souza, Rector / Dean of the Kalyanpur Milagres Cathedral, Sr Matilda Monteiro, Provincial Superior of the Sisters of Charity, Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje, former minister J GEORGE, MLC Ivan D’Souza and wife, former MLA J. R. Lobo, Shaila D’Souza, President of Barakur Gram Panchayat, and Shri. Shantaram Shetty Rajotsava awardee will be the chief guests.

Gerald M. Gonsalves, vice president and Vivet Lewis, secretary were present.
