Udupi : Less use of plastics in our daily lives can easily sort out the problem of waste accumulation, said Dinakar Babu, President of Udupi Zilla Panchayat.
He was speaking at an interactive programme and workshop on liquid and solid waste management held for the selected gram panchayat presidents, PDOs, doctors, teachers, Asha and Anganawadi workers at Udupi Zilla Panchayat Hall on July 7.
Dinakar Babu said the problem of sorting out waste existed in all gram panchayats in the district. “The waste in individual houses can be segregated into liquid and solid waste and relevant portions used for composting. Minimising the use of plastic in our lives will also help sort out the problem of wastage collection. Last year Udupi district got first place in the assessment of successful waste management in South India. This year inorder to achieve a better standing at the national level assessment, cooperation is needed from each person, departments and various associations,” he said. He asked all gram panchayats in the district to create awareness on this matter at least once in a week.
On the occasion, brochures pertaining to waste management and greenery were released.
Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis said the solid waste and liquid waste if utilised systematically could be reused, recycled into usable products. “Since twenty years, we are hearing about the waste management problem. Earlier, our ancestors reused the waste and hence then no such problem occurred. Now the use of plastic poses a great challenge for the waste management. It is each person’s responsibility to solve the problem of waste management”, she added.
Zilla Panchayat Joint Secretary Nagesh Raiker was present on the occasion. Chief Project Official Srinivas Rao welcomed and proposed a vote of thanks.
