Udupi: People of the undivided Dakshina Kannada love their gold, but usually this love is not quantified in terms of sales by the various gold shops that dot its landscape. This annoymity came to an end on April 21st, Akshaya Trithiya, when reports say that the sale of gold in the two districts of Mangaluru and Udupi touched 400 kg, 20% more than last year.
While Udupi city witnessed 60 kgs of gold purchases on Tuesday, as against 50 kg purchases recorded last year, Udupi district saw gold business of 100 kgs. In Mangaluru, gold purchases were recorded at 150 kg while entire Dakshina Kannada witnessed sales of 300 kgs.
However, as per sources, the coastal districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada could not compete with Kasargod district of Kerala where gold sales on one day is estimated to have reached 600 kgs.
A gram of gold cost Rs 2,520 on Tuesday as per this, the entire turn over of one day is estimated at Rs 120 crore.
