Udupi: A gang of young robbers, that has been targeting locals and immigrant labourers, has been nabbed by the Udupi Police. Among the arrested is one of the accused in the infamous “Homestay Attack” of Mangaluru city, Shreyas alias Sacchu, a resident of Kallianpur.

Shreyas, Abhijith, Vignesh, Sampath, Manish Kumar, Shushank and Nikhil Shetty are the youngsters who have been arrested. Two other members of the gang, Abhishek and Harshith, have managed to escape the police net.

The gang, consisting of youngsters between the ages of 19 and 21, would target people at night when they were walking alone in Udupi and Manipal. They would hit their targets with a bottle on their head and loot them of their cash, phones and other valuables that they would be carrying on their person.

Even though there were many such incidents, the police were unable to apprehend them because many of the victims did not come forward to file a complaint, and the attacks always happened at night, during the weekend so the police were unable to identify them even if CCTV footage was available.

The police finally got a break when a local was attacked by the gang, who made away with his mobile at Santhekatte on June 16. With the help of the complaint filed by the victim, the police were able to identify one of the assailants and soon nabbed him. He was interrogated by the police at the station and the information obtained was used to nab three others from Bengaluru and Mangaluru.

The arrested have been remanded to judicial custody in Mangaluru and the hunt is on for the two accused who are presently absconding.

According to the police, there are numerous cases registered in Mangaluru, Udupi and Manipal against the gang.
