Police, mining dept raids illegal sand mining, 20 arrested

Udupi: Bhoobalan, Assistant Commissioner of Kundapur Sub-division along with police and mining department officials raided eight locations of illegal sand extraction at Handady near Barkur under the Brahmavar Police Station limits here on February 7.

Acting on credible information, Bhoobalan along with the police officials raided the spot and arrested 20 labourers, seized 28 boats and 9 tippers.

The officials during the raid also cleared the sheds built for the labourers.

During the raid, extraction owners Thimmappa Shetty, Karunakar Shetty and Philip Dias managed to escape.

Srikanth, Circle Inspector of Brahmavar; Madhu, Police Sub-inspector of Brahmavar Police Station and Mahadevappa, an officer of the Mining Department and team took part in the operation.
