Police drive against shrill horns, silencers in district from today

Udupi: The Udupi District police is holding a special drive for a week from Saturday, June 16 against two-wheelers, three-wheelers and four-wheelers using shrill horns and modifying the silencers of their vehicles, informed Superintendent of police Laxman B Nimbargi.

Speaking to media persons during the phone-in programme at the District Police Office here on June 15, he said that action would also be taken against the mechanics who install shrill horns and shrill exhausts by modifying silencers in bikes. The special drive would be held throughout the district in order to control the noise pollution.

Meanwhile, a special drive would also be held against the Matka and other gambling businesses in the district. There were four complaints on Matka business in the district, especially Byndoor, Gangulli, Kollur areas.

Nimbargi said that a meeting would be held soon with district Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis with regard to ensuring safety on National Highway 66 consequent to a report submitted by experts from Manipal Institute of Technology recently.

A caller said that some private buses were not stopping at the respective bus stands but on the NH 66 in Kota, Saligrama, Sasthan and Brahmavar. At the Sasthan toll gate plaza, big tankers were blocking the road. The SP said that already three police vehicles were holding patrol on NH 66 and three more highway patrol police vehicles, with advanced facilities will be added to the patrol team.

Another caller said that some shops in Kollur were selling liquor illegally. SP promised to take action immediately.

There were several calls pertaining to road safety matters. One caller said that the PPC road in front of the fish market was jammed due to both the sides vehicle parking. Even though it is a one-way road, motorists do not follow the rule. There are several road speed breakers installed at various places like Santhekatte, Kodavoor–Laxminagar. There are no proper traffic sign boards where road speed breakers are installed. Some vehicles have no number plates also. Laxman Nimbargi said that from a safety point of view, instructions would be given to make colour reflectors wherever there is a need near the roads.

A caller said that some bus drivers were not wearing uniforms. Another caller said that there was a shortage of buses on the route. SP said that meeting would be conducted along with the bus drivers and bus owners for violating traffic rules and other traffic matters.

Another caller said that illegal shops were established near NH 66. A caller said that some shops located near Barkur First Grade College were selling cigarettes.

Since June 25, six persons were arrested in 5 Matka cases, 17 cases registered against the gambling, against DPS 3 cases and in illegal liquor transport, 7 persons arrested. Cases have been registered against 140 under COPTA, 23 persons for drunken driving, 49 for using mobile phones while driving, 2,627 cases of riding without a helmet, 68 cases registered for overspeeding and other traffic-related 3,627 cases were registered.
