POCSO Act: Convict imprisoned for 10 years

Udupi: A man, who was a serial sex offender harassing minor boys was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 by POCSO Court (Fast Track Special Court-1) here on Sunday March 8.

The convict Chandra Hemmady (42) has been in the first of the 21 similar cases registered against him under the POCSO Act. The trial in the remaining 20 cases is underway. The convict used to commit the offence by visiting villages as a journalist and promised to highlight problems there through his articles. He used to ask boys to accompany him to show around and ended up sexually assaulting them.

As many as 21 parents had filed complaints against him in Byndoor, Gangolli, Kollur and Kundapur police station limits of which 16 victims were said to be from Byndoor police station limits alone.
