Udupi: In a heart wrenching incident more than 20 monkeys were found dead at the second curve of Agumbe ghats, in the Someshwar reserve forest limits on Thursday night. The episode that came to light at about 9 pm is evidently a case of poisoning.

It is suspected that miscreants may have fed them with poison laced food when the troop of monkeys ventured near the road in search of food.

The witnesses say that while some were dead, there were several monkeys that were writhing in pain, taking their last breath. Some passers by had stopped their vehicles to feed water to the monkeys, but nothing could save them.

It was only recently that several monkeys were found dead at a place called Kabbinale in Hebri due to poisoning.

The Hebri division Wildlife officials had visited the spot and ensured that the corpses of the monkeys were cleared from the spot.

The locals have been demanding stern action from the department concerned.
