Udupi: Rajya Sabha MP Oscar Fernandes flagged off a procession from Jodukatte, near Big Bazar to Volakadu Composite High School here prior to the inauguration of three-day State level Karate Championship on Friday, November 25. The tournament will end on November 27.
A large number of Karate participants, referees, team managers, organizers along with school brass band and tableau team participated in the procession. The Karate Torch was carried by the former Karate champions in an open jeep. The procession started from Jodukatte via Old Taluk Office, Court Road, Diana Circle, K M Marg and Service Bus Stand to Volakad School.
Blossom Fernandes, Amrith Shenoy, Nithyanand Kemmannu, Nissar Ahmed, Raviraj Nayak, Madhukar, Yagnesh Acharya, M A Gaffoor, Volakad High School Head Mistress Nirmala and others were present at the flag off ceremony. The state level Karate Championship is jointly organised by the district administration, Department of Public Instruction and Volakadu Government High School, Udupi.
The competition is being held in the Under-14 age category for both boys and girls of primary school and Under-17 category for the high school boys and girls in nine divisions. The competitions are subcategorized based on weight of the participants.
