Udupi: The team of officials from Udupi averted a child marriage scheduled to be solemnised on December 11 in Udupi.

As per the directions of Udupi Deputy Commissioner, Deputy Director of Women and Child Welfare Department, Tahshildar, police and several other organisation officials reached the venue where a minor girl was set to tie the knot.

Daughter of Prabhavathi from Perampalli was all set to be given in marriage, while during inquiry it was found that the girl was a few months short to the legal age of marriage.

However, the team of officials spoke to the mother of the bride and informed her that it would be illegal for her to get her minor daughter married off even if she is only couple of months to reach the legal age for marriage and that it was imperative for her to wait till the girl reaches the permissible age for marriage.

When the purohith at whose residence the wedding was to solemnised was questioned, he said that he did probe about the age of the girl and that the family had promised to produce documents proving that the girl was a major. However, he has agreed that he has committed a mistake by not cross checking the details and that he would never in future commit such a crime.
