Udupi: After last year’s successful Iftar get-together at the Sri Krishna Math in Udupi, Sri Vishweshateertha Swamiji of Pejawar Math has said that this year, the get-together would not be held.

On Saturday, June 9, the Pejawar pontiff told reporters at the Krishna Kalyana Mantapa in Tumakuru that as he is on a tour of the state this year, it will not be possible for him to organise the Iftar. He also added that compared to the previous year, the Muslims were not keen on attending the Iftar programme at the Sri Krishna Math this time around.

He said that some of the Muslims were still under the false impression that the Iftar last year was held in the room where the God’s idols are kept when in fact the event was organised in the adjacent room. “They are therefore not interested in attending another Iftar at the Math,” he lamented.

Last year, when the Pejawar pontiff organised the Iftar programme at the Sri Krishna Math, his move invited a mixed response from the masses, many of whom lauded the seer for his kind-hearted gesture. There were also those who were not too happy with the pontiff, Hindutva leader Pramod Muthalik being the most prominent critic, terming his move as an “insult”.
