Udupi: Udupi-Chikkamagaluru district MP Shobha Karandlaje has assured maximum relief to owners whose houses were partially damaged in the heavy rains that lashed the region. She was presiding over a meeting held at the DC Office, Udupi on Monday, August 26.
Based on the information that four houses within the district were fully damaged, Karandlaje urged all the Tahsildars to re-evaluate the damage caused to the said houses and dispense the maximum amount of relief to the owners.
According to officials, nearly 325 hectares of paddy crop and 11.26 acres of horticultural crop have been damaged. This amounts to an estimated loss of Rs 22 lakhs and Rs 14.64 lakhs respectively. The MP suggested drafting a plan to prevent sea erosion and directed officials to clear the Baja Dam sludge in order to prevent a future water-shortage crisis.
She also asked the Health Department to be on alert as diseases such as dengue and malaria were on the rise. Udupi DC Jagadeesh suggested enlisting the help of local nursing students in carrying out a larval survey of the region.
District Panchayat President Dinaka Babu, MLA Raghupathi Bhat, District Panchayat Vice-President Sheila K Shetty, District Superintendent of Police Nisha James, Additional District Collector Vidya Kumari, and several other district officials were present.
