Udupi: Mahatma Gandhi believed that environmental cleanliness is responsible for mental, physical and spiritual growth. In order to clean the Udupi district, everyone should celebrate Gandhiji's 150th birth anniversary by making a resolution for a 'Clean Udupi - Plastic Free Udupi', said MLA Raghupathi Bhat.
He was speaking at the inaugural function of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi at the Bhujanga Park, Ajjarkad on Wednesday, October 2. The programme was organised under the auspices of the district administration, Zilla Panchayat, Municipal Council, Information and Public Relations Department and Kannada and Culture Department.
"The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was set up five years ago. As Gandhiji hoped for cleanliness, the citizens must also be aware of cleanliness," he said.
Deputy Commissioner of Udupi district G Jagadeesh also spoke on the occasion.
Thinker Dayananda Shetty Dendoor said that Gandhiji was opposed to obscurity and thought that everyone should be educated.
Prakash Suvarna Katapadi welcomed and made a presentation. CMC member Dhananjay delivered a vote of thanks.
There was a massive cleanup process by students and voluntary organizations from various colleges after the programme.
Zilla Panchayat president Dinakar Babu, Udupi Taluk Panchayat President Nita Gururaja Poojary, Municipal Council members Rashmi Chittaranjan, Balakrishna Shetty, Manasi Pai, G.P. Chief Executive Officer Preethi Gehlot, ASP Kumara Chandra, Municipal Councillor Anand Kalolikar and Assistant Director of Kannada and Culture Department Kumar Bekkeri were also present.
