Kundapur: Kota police foiled an attempt of illegal cattle trafficking and rescued several bovine animals that were being transported in inhumane conditions in a pickup truck on Bidalkatte road near Hombadi Mandadi village here.

Police sources said that routine checks were being conducted at the spot when a white-coloured truck moving suspiciously. The driver and his accomplices left the vehicle in the middle of the road and ran away, raising suspicions. To the dismay of the police, they found cattle and buffaloes mercilessly tied and stuffed – with ropes binding their legs and neck – into the back of the truck by the traffickers to avoid suspicions.

All in all, police confiscated three cows, four calves and two buffaloes from the vehicle. Out of these, however, a cow and a buffalo were found dead.

Preliminary reports said that the pickup belonged to one Mohammad Zabrood, a native of Honnavar. More details are awaited. Kota police have booked a case and conducting further investigations.
