Udupi: The Kapu police have arrested a 19-year-old youth in connection with a theft case. The youth has been accused of stealing valuables from his relative’s house in Shivanand Nagar near Shankerpura.
The youth has been identified as Nishanth S Kumar, a resident of Kothalikatte in the Uliyargoli village near Kaup.
Kumar allegedly stole jewellery weighing 144 grams worth Rs 4.80 lakh. The valuables were stored in a cupboard in the house of Shankar S and his wife Girija. The theft is reported to have occurred two months ago, however, the couple filed a complaint about the theft in the Kaup Police station on September 13.
The couple suspected Kumar to be the culprit as he visited their home often.
Nishanth was found by the police, roaming in the Kaup bus stand area on Wednesday morning, and was detained for questioning. Confessing to the crime, he told police that he was going to Udupi to sell some of the jewellery that was still in his possession. He also informed the police that he had exchanged some of the jewellery for new ornaments. He had also pledged some of the stolen jewellery in a cooperative bank for a loan.
So far, the Kaup police have recovered jewellery weighing about 111.52 grams worth Rs 2.50 lakhs.
He was reportedly produced before the court and was remanded to judicial custody till October 3.
The operation was led by Rajashekar Saganooru Kaup Police Station sub-inspector of police, and team, under directions of Nisha James, District Superintendent of Police, Krishnakanth assistant superintendent of police and Mahesh Prasad Kaup Circle Police Inspector.
