Kasturba Hospital Manipal launches GI Physiology lab and Motility clinic

Manipal: Kasturba Hospital, Manipal launched Gastrointestinal Physiology lab and Motility Clinic on Saturday, May 25.

The GI Physiology lab and Motility clinic was inaugurated by Dr Poornima Baliga, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Health Sciences), Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal. Dr Rajesh Sainani, Gastroenterologist, Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai and Dr Pragna Rao, Dean of Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal were the guests of honour for the event. C G Muthana, Chief Operating Officer, Manipal Cluster and Dr Avinash Shetty, Medical Superintendent, Kasturba Hospital Manipal, Dr Shiran Shetty, Professor and Head of the department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal were present.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Poornima Baliga said, “Manipal is giving the best of services to its patients. Manipal is known for its quality patient care and education. Being a Tertiary care Medical college hospital, Kasturba Hospital offers quality service to patients by adding more and more speciality and sub-speciality to its services”.

Dr Rajesh Sainani said “10-20% of the population is suffering from some form of functional bowel diseases”. Explaining about the GI Physiology lab and Motility clinic at the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, he said “the lab conducts a variety of diagnostic tests to evaluate and diagnose abnormal conditions within the gastrointestinal system”.
“Services provided includes Manometry studies to evaluate motor function and coordination of muscular activity throughout the digestive system, 24-hour pH reflux monitoring, esophageal impedance-pH monitoring for evaluation of acidic and non-acidic reflux, evaluation for constipation and evaluation for difficulty in swallowing, anorectal manometry and rectal biofeedback for diagnosis and treatment of anorectal dysfunction” he added.

Dr Pragna Rao conveyed best wishes for the new service and said “Kasturba Hospital Manipal is doing well in bridging the gap between the medical, paramedical and para clinical parameters. Hope the GI lab will enhance the requirement of patient”.

Dr. Avinash Shetty welcomed the gathering and said “Kasturba Hospital, Manipal was the first in south India to install Manometry machines back in 1992. Over the past two decades we have treated thousands of patients with functional gastrointestinal disorder at a very affordable and economical price. Now we are happy to inform that the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology is upgrading the GI Physiology lab and Motility clinic with latest High Resolution Manometry machines which is the first of its kind in this part of the country”.

Dr Shiran Shetty gave an overview of Gastrointestinal Physiology lab and Motility clinic before proposing the vote of thanks.
