Karnataka election: Over Rs 13 lakh of seized cash returned, says Udupi DC

Udupi: Since the declaration of the model code of conduct, the Election Commission’s surveillance and flying squads have seized Rs. 19,05,150 cash and Rs. 1,32,239 worth liquor in Udupi district, said Priyanka Mary Francis, Deputy Commissioner of Udupi District.

Addressing media persons at the press meet held at DC office on Wednesday, April 18 Priyanka said that out of the seized Rs. 19,05,150 cash a sum of Rs. 13,75,750 was returned on due submission of valid documents to the Surveillance Committee, which will meet thrice in a week.

She said that three cases of illegal possession of cash were reported from Byndoor legislative constituency, Kundapur legislative constituency and Kaup legislative constituency amounting to Rs. 4,45,340, Rs. 7,18,710 and Rs. 6,81,100 respectively. In Udupi legislative constituency one case of illegal possession of cash was reported worth Rs. 59,000 and no such cases have been reported from Karkala legislative constituency.

Out of the total 27 FIRs registered at various police stations in the district, two pertain to Byndoor legislative constituency, six from Udupi, four to Kundapur and Kaup each, and five from Karkala legislative constituency, she said.

The excise department seized total 201.87 liters of liquor and 6.57 liters of liquor was seized by the police department during the raids, she added.

The DC said that the date for election notifications being April 17 in the state, candidates need to file their nominations in the respective contesting constituencies.

She said that a total of 36,022 applications have been received, including 20,682 for new registrations, 6 under Form 6A, 8,792 from Form 7, 5,602 under Form 8 and 950 under Form No 8A.

The last date to submit the electoral forms is April 24, and the Electoral Returning officer will take the decision on the same.

The nominations would be received at Sthri Shakthi Bhavan at Byndoor, Assistant Commissioner’s office, Mini Vidhana Soudha at Kundapur, Old Zilla Panchayat building, first floor, Bannanje for Udupi and Kaup and Mini Vidhana Soudha , Room no 5,Taluk office in Karkala. All political parties should submit an application 24 hours prior for use of Helicopters and obtain permission from the election commission, she said.

Priyanka Mary Francis along with other officials released T-shirts and caps for the 40 employees of Solid and Liquid Resource Management units in the areas of Varamballi, Nitte, Hebri, Hardalli-Mandalli, Mudaru, Vandse and Mundkuru. These are employed in the SVEEP publicity.

Shivananda Kapashi, CEO of Zilla Panchayat, Anuradha G. Additional DC, Poovitha, IAS district Nodal Officer for elections were present at the press meet.
