Udupi: Dr. A V Baliga Memorial Hospital, Doddanagudde in association with Drug Control Department, Udupi District Chemists and Druggists Association observed International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at Dr. A V Baliga Memorial Hospital on June 26.
Dr. Sameer Kumar Praharaj, Professor and Head of De-addiction Unit of Kasturba Hospital, Manipal inaugurated the programme.
Dr. Praharaj said that drug abuse was a very serious problem all over the world. “Day by day more and more youngsters are falling prey to the trap of drug abuse, which is a cause for concern. It is imperative to provide community assistance to prevent drug abuse. The adage ‘prevention is better than cure’ is substantially relevant, he opined.
He also highlighted the role of pharmacists in supplementing the government programmes to increase awareness about drug abuse. “Without prescription of the registered doctors, one should not use the drugs,” he stressed.
Nagaraj K V, Assistant Drug Controller of Udupi district, explained the government rules stipulated to be followed by every pharmacist.
Manohar Shetty, President of Udupi District Chemists and Druggists Association, Dr. Deepak Malya and Nagarajmurthy among others were present.
