Infant Mortality Rate shoots up in district, Udupi DC seeks report

Udupi: Deputy Commissioner Hepsiba Rani Korlapati, worrying about the increased number of Infants Mortality in Udupi, instructed the Health department to submit a detailed report about the reasons behind the same and about the areas of its frequent occurrence.

She was addressing a meeting of the various sections of the health department of the district at her office on Wednesday May 29.
In the Month of April this year, a total of seven infants had died in Udupi, out of which four were female infants. “Study each incident of infant death and submit a detailed report,” said the DC to the health department officials. Seven women had died during child birth since December 2018 till date. Keeping this number in mind, the health department should focus on providing all the emergency facilities in the hospitals in the gynaecology sections, she said.

To take precautionary measures in curbing dengue and malaria, the ASHA workers should visit houses once in a month and create awareness among general public to keep their premises clean, the DC further opined.
The education department should make the students aware about need for cleanliness and train them to identify mosquito larvae and implement their knowledge in controlling mosquito growth at their houses, instructed the DC.

Udupi was second in malaria incidences in the state. Sharing the details about steps taken to control epidemic diseases in the district, the DC said that funds were allotted to take up larvae survey from June to October this year in about 60 centres. June will be observed as anti-malaria month. Processions and other people awareness programs would be conducted during this month, she informed.

Water tank cleaning and hand wash program in Anganvadis and schools should be undertaken jointly by Public Education Department, Women and Child Development Department and District Health department. All the said programs should be undertaken in an attractive way, instructed the DC.

The DC expressed her unhappiness about the sluggish pace in distributing identity cards to Endosalphon victims having more than 25 per cent disability and medical equipments to bed-ridden victims. She gave strict instructions to complete these tasks within two days.

Udupi Taluk Panchayath CEO Raju, Women and Child Development Department deputy director Gracy Gonsalves, Health Department officers Dr Prashanth Bhat, Dr MG Ram, Dr Rama Rao and others were present at the meeting.
