Udupi: May 21 marks the death anniversary of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, a day that is observed by many in the country with reverence. The members of the Congress party of the Udupi district observed this day at the Congress Bhavan in Brahmagiri near here.
On the occasion, Sathish Amin Padukere, President of Udupi Block Congress remembered Rajiv Gandhi as the reason behind India’s standing in the world today. “Today, India is shining because of the work undertaken by Rajiv Gandhi during his tenure as prime minister”, he said.
“The role that he played in the development of the youth is still remembered by a large number of people today. He was the one who gave the voting rights to youth aged 18 years and above”, he added.
Nagesh Kumar Udyavar, senior Congress leader recollected the information technology and telecom revolution launched by Rajiv Gandhi. “He gave a new direction to the youth and women of the country. His dynamic leadership and vision directed the country towards integrated development in rural areas. He was also responsible for releasing funds to the Panchayat Raj bodies directly”, he said.
